Across the Street, Around the Worldby Jennifer Williams Not only is the author of this interesting publication founder and Executive Director of the British American Arts Association (now trading as Centre for Creative Communities) but she is also a talented artist. Her unusual illustrations enhance the publication, encapsulating interesting quotations into boats, bottles and maps of the world. Here is a gentle introduction into cultural exchanges written for artists, teachers, community workers, policy makers, producers and funders. Rather than providing the hard facts and detail and, with an emphasis on exchange of skills rather than collaboration, it deals with the philosophy behind these activities and the positive role the arts can play. A quotation featured in the book sums up its ethos, The key thing is getting involved with the process and not just looking at the product. It considers the most important questions, why do it, what can be achieved and who it is for? It is a slim, attractively presented volume and easy to read from cover to cover. The only fault I can mention (and it is a small one) is that Jennifer recommends sources for advice and help which, in my experience, are not really the bodies I would turn to. Across the Street is a must for anyone considering involvement in any kind of intercultural activity. It opens the readers' eyes to possibilities. It highlights problems and offers solutions but most importantly, it offers clear objectives. The case studies featured at the end of the book are enticing enough to encourage us all to dip a toe in the water.
