Short courses and how to
find them
|
|
KSAM
is still in the construction and consultation phase. We welcome
suggestions for additions and alterations to the information presented.
What short courses can offer:
Short courses available on open programmes are a valuable part of the training or development mix.
When they are well-designed and well-run, they provide an intense and structured input of learning on skills, knowledge, or both. They make full use of the impact of face-to-face learning and working with a peer group.
If you select the course carefully, put aside time to plan any preparation beforehand, and build in opportunities to use the material on your return to work, then they can be a very powerful way to learn. |
|
5 Ways to find training courses:
- Use a regional arts-specific sign-posting service – someone to provide you with advice and guidance on training and learning. This is available either from the Arts Council England regional office or from a specialist training organisation in the region (See list 1). You can also contact regional providers directly (see list 1).
- Use your art form membership body, or other specialist organisation, such as the Arts Marketing Association as a training provider or a guide to courses (see list 2).
- Use the list and matrix we have created here of courses provided by national specialist training organisations in the arts, the voluntary sector or across sector – selected because of their reputation for effective courses and their appropriateness for arts organisations (see list 3, parts 1 and 2).
- Metier and LearnDirect have launched a new website – artsadvice.com – that provides free course and career advice for those working, or looking to work, within the Creative Industries. It also runs a free phoneline for arts careers enquiries, 0800 093 0444, where you can speak to trained advisors. Creative People, a network of organisations providing professional development for people in arts and crafts is also a valuable way into many training opportunities. www.creativepeople.org.uk
- Ask around – personal recommendation can be very valuable in finding courses and in helping select which ones to attend.
|
|
Using the
lists
The lists are
intended to signpost you to appropriate training providers, and
give you the contact details necessary to browse their websites
or ask them to send you leaflets with fuller information on the
courses available.
They cover organisations that provide training in the form of short
courses (and sometimes many other forms of learning as well). There
is information on directories of individual trainers, and
where to go for listings of Universities and Colleges providing
longer courses.
|
|
What
to consider in deciding where to look for short courses
Some subject
areas are readily available from a number of training providers,
and you may be spoilt for choice. Other subjects may only
be covered by a provider at a considerable distance from your
base, and perhaps in another field of work not the arts.
How do you select which course is the most appropriate for
you, or decide whether the only course on offer is going to
be worth the investment of time and money?
Firstly
it helps to be clear what you want to learn and what
you want to do with the new knowledge or skill after the course.
Secondly
do you want a trainer with knowledge of your art form
or scale of organisation? You need to consider whether the
subject is something that you think you would rather learn
"close to home" in a context similar to that in
which you work in an arts setting, or small organisational
setting etc, or does it not matter, or it would be more interesting
to see how others do it elsewhere. This should then provide
some guidance as to where to go to get the training.
Thirdly
- an important part of short courses is the learning that
is gained from interaction with the other participants
and where you choose to go for the training will determine
the group that you are working with. Do you want to be working
with people from similar organisations, or from a range of
different settings?
