KSAM
- Knowledge Services for Arts Management - A fuller Explanation
In business,
learning is now called knowledge management, and there is a strong
emphasis on the methods for sharing and passing on knowledge.
Arts management
is a knowledge-based profession and one with an informal learning
culture, therefore it is important that it develops its own systems
for sharing and passing on knowledge.
A new consortium
has been formed of organisations already providing knowledge services
to the sector. It is called Knowledge Services for Arts Management
or Ksam, and comprises SAMs Books, Arts Professional magazine
and Arts Research Digest, along with specialist national associations
in the arts, and key Higher Education Institutes who specialise
in arts and cultural management. The purpose of this consortium
is to provide a system for the more effective collection, organisation
and dissemination of knowledge for arts managers, covering the full
range of ideas, information and intelligence.
It is generally
agreed by arts managers, arts funders and arts researchers, that
while there exists a wealth of information that arts managers would
find invaluable in their working lives, they very rarely know about
it at the moment they need it, and much of it is not in an easily
accessible form. There is a need for a national, accessible, searchable
database / website of arts management knowledge.
So the idea
at its simplest is to create a Knowledge Bank, which makes available
all the arts management related information hidden within back copies
of Arts Professional/ArtsBusiness magazine, Arts Research Digest,
at the Arts and Cultural Management Studies Unit at Sussex University
and at the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management at the University
of Northumbria, and organisations such as ITC, Arts Marketing Association,
National Rural Touring Forum, and the equivalent organisations for
all art forms. It will show summaries of books, reports, articles,
and provide lists to other useful websites.
By a few clicks
of your mouse, you will be able to find a selected range of relevant
material on the subject of your choice, from social inclusion to
sponsorship, from evaluation to VAT, from leadership to learning.
The Knowledge Bank will also be available at conferences and events
alongside SAMs Books.

|
Knowledge Services
for Arts Management will:
- enable and
enrich learning links across traditional art form and geographical
divides
- make links
between theory (implicit and explicit) and practice closing
the gap between those primarily interested in one or the other
- disseminate
models of best practice, encourage debate and discussion, and
enable others to borrow from and build upon those models
- promote equal
opportunities by valuing diversity within practice, and by facilitating
access to materials in a range of formats and settings
- remove the
obstacles and take the chance out of the fact finding process.

The Knowledge
Bank project has funding from the Arts Council under its Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) pilot programme, CreativePeople,
and the Knowledge Bank is linked to another CPD project, All Ways
Learning, which is providing arts management CPD in the Arts Council
England: South East region.
The design and
construction phase of the Knowledge Bank is underway and it is available
in embryo form on www.ksam.org.uk.
We welcome your feedback on the site as it develops. Emails to info@ksam.org.uk
